The best FTP client for Mac depends on the job, a transfer window or a mounted drive

Search for the best FTP client for Mac and you keep finding the same names: Cyberduck, FileZilla, Transmit, and ForkLift.

Most comparisons focus on protocols, pricing, and interface design. Those things matter, but they skip a more important question. Do you want an app for transferring files, or do you want the server to behave like a drive?

Those are two different workflows. Choosing between them narrows your options faster than any feature checklist.

Transfer client or mounted drive?

A traditional FTP client gives you a transfer window. You connect to a server, browse its files, and move items between the remote system and your Mac.

A mounting app takes a different approach. It adds the server to Finder, and other Mac applications reach the remote files through the file system.

Neither approach is better in the abstract. The right choice depends on how you work.

If you occasionally upload a website export or download a backup, use a transfer client. If you open, edit, and save files on the same server throughout the week, mount it as a drive.

That distinction matters more than whether an app supports ten cloud services or twenty.

The traditional FTP clients

Cyberduck

Cyberduck is free, open source, and available for macOS and Windows. It supports FTP, FTPS, SFTP, WebDAV, S3, and a broad selection of cloud storage services.

Its external-editor feature is particularly useful. Cyberduck downloads the selected file, opens it in your chosen editor, and uploads the revised version when you save. It is still a transfer workflow, but much of the transfer happens behind the scenes.

FileZilla

FileZilla has been the standard answer to "I need an FTP client" for more than two decades. It is free, open source, and available for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

The interface is unapologetically practical: local files on one side, remote files on the other, and a transfer queue below. It supports FTP, FTPS, and SFTP without trying to become a general-purpose cloud storage app.

It is not the most Mac-like option, but it is familiar, dependable, and widely documented. For straightforward FTP transfers at no cost, it is hard to argue with.

Transmit

Panic's Transmit is the polished, Mac-native choice. Its interface is clean, its file-handling tools are refined, and it supports both the standard transfer protocols and a long list of cloud storage services.

Older versions included Transmit Disk, which mounted remote servers in Finder. That feature was removed in Transmit 5, so the current app is designed around transfers and synchronization. It is the pick for Mac users willing to pay for a refined transfer experience.

ForkLift

ForkLift is more than an FTP client. It is a dual-pane file manager that handles local and remote files in the same interface.

It supports FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, S3, and other remote services, but its real appeal is broader: it replaces Finder for people who prefer a two-pane workflow and more advanced file-management tools.

Where transfer windows start to get in the way

For occasional uploads, the transfer model is hard to beat. Connect, move the file, disconnect. A free client such as Cyberduck or FileZilla is all you need.

The friction appears when the transfer is only the first step.

Suppose you regularly edit images stored on a remote server. The conventional workflow is to download the image, open the local copy, make your changes, save, upload the file again, and confirm you replaced the correct remote version.

Do that once and it is trivial. Do it dozens of times a day and it becomes a source of delays, duplicate files, and version mistakes.

External-editor features automate parts of the process, but the underlying model stays the same: the FTP client shuttles files between two locations.

A mounted drive changes the model. Instead of managing transfers, you browse the server in Finder and open files from there. Applications see a file-system location rather than a separate FTP window.

The mounted-drive approach

ExpanDrive is designed around this second workflow. It mounts FTP and FTPS servers in Finder so they appear alongside the other storage locations on your Mac.

On current versions of macOS, ExpanDrive uses Apple's File Provider framework rather than a kernel extension. Mounted storage appears in Finder and under ~/Library/CloudStorage, the same way other modern cloud-drive integrations do.

For FTP connections it supports plain FTP, explicit FTPS, implicit FTPS, and both active and passive transfer modes. Implicit FTPS support matters when working with older partner systems and legacy enterprise endpoints, which is exactly where FTP still lives.

ExpanDrive does not synchronize the entire server before you can use it. Files are fetched and cached as needed, so you can browse large remote directory structures without downloading everything to your Mac first.

A mount is not always the right answer

Mounting a server is convenient, but it does not make network storage behave exactly like a local SSD. Performance still depends on connection speed, latency, server limits, and the protocol in use.

A traditional transfer client is the better tool when you only need to move a few files, when you are moving one very large file and want a visible transfer queue, when you need precise control over retries and permissions, when your connection is unreliable, or when you want a clear separation between the local and remote copies.

A mount makes more sense when you return to the same server frequently, when several applications need the remote files, when you want to browse the server from Finder, and when the remote system is part of your everyday workspace. The verdict

For occasional transfers, start with Cyberduck or FileZilla. Both are free, capable, and more than sufficient for routine FTP work.

Choose Transmit if you want a polished Mac-native transfer client with broad cloud support. Choose ForkLift if you also want a powerful dual-pane replacement for Finder.

If the server is somewhere you work rather than somewhere you occasionally send files, look beyond the traditional FTP window. Mounting it as a drive removes an entire layer of file management from your day.

The real question is not which FTP client has the longest feature list. It is whether you want to transfer files to the server or work with the server as part of your Mac.
