Since April 2025Free for personal use, forever

ExpanDrive is now free.

Files.com acquired ExpanDrive in January 2024 and relaunched it under a new licensing model in April 2025 — free for personal use. Every cloud service, every operating system, no trial timer, no degraded free tier. Forever.

— What changed

Files.com acquired ExpanDrive in January 2024.

ExpanDrive used to be a paid product. For most of its twenty-plus years — founded in 2004 — you paid a license fee per seat to mount cloud storage as a drive on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The product worked, customers stuck, the company kept shipping.

In January 2024, Files.com acquired ExpanDrive from the prior owner. A transition period followed through 2024 and into early 2025 — engineering, support, and the product roadmap moved over to Files.com. In April 2025 the transition wrapped, the prior owner stepped away, and Files.com relaunched ExpanDrive under a new licensing model. Files.com is the File Orchestration Platform used by 4,000+ businesses including Equifax, Rag & Bone, Cognizant, and Michelin — an enterprise platform sold to IT teams at a very different price point. The win for Files.com isn’t ExpanDrive’s per-seat license fees; it’s bringing a beautifully simple desktop tool to everyone who’s ever needed one, and letting the teams who grow past ten users discover Files.com naturally.

So ExpanDrive is free now. For everyone using it solo. For every household, every freelancer, every small team up to ten users. Not a 14-day trial. Not a feature-degraded free tier with strings attached. Free, indefinitely, with the full product.

ExpanDrive offers a beautifully simple way to access remote storage right from your desktop. We’re thrilled to make it free for personal use, helping more people experience frictionless file access.

— What's in the free tier

Everything that matters. No timer.

Every cloud service we support.

Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, SharePoint, Box, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, iDrive E2, Nextcloud — plus SFTP and WebDAV. No "free tier subset." The full integration set.

All three OSes, native.

macOS, Windows, and Linux — signed installers for each. ExpanDrive is one of the very few cloud-drive tools that supports Linux at all, and Linux gets the same product as Mac and Windows.

No trial timer. Forever.

Not 7 days. Not 14 days. Not "free forever, limited to 1 connection." Free for personal use is free indefinitely, with full read-and-write access and the same on-demand streaming + offline cache as the paid plans.

Up to 10 users in your org.

Solo, household, small team — the free tier covers it. Past 10 users in a year, you step up to Business at a flat $29/month for the whole team — which adds Server Edition, the Web Management Console, and priority support.

— Nobody else does this

The only real free tier in the category.

Mountain Duck, NetDrive, CloudMounter, and Cloud Drive Mapper all ship a trial and then ask for the credit card. ExpanDrive ships a free tier — full product, no time limit, every cloud, every OS.

— If you used to pay

Welcome back.

If you bought an ExpanDrive license at some point in the last twenty years — that license still works on the version it was sold for. We aren’t clawing anything back.

The current free tier covers more than your original license likely did. Every cloud and protocol we’ve added since you bought — S3, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, SharePoint, modern OneDrive, Nextcloud, the Linux build — is in the free tier. Download the latest version and reconnect; your accounts pick up where they were.

If your team has grown past ten users, or if you need the Web Management Console, Server Edition, or priority support, the Business plan is a flat $29/month for the whole team, up to 10 users — pennies per user. Beyond that, the Enterprise tier handles volume licensing, SAML SSO, and dedicated support.

— Common questions

The skeptical version.

The questions that come up when someone hears “this used to cost money, now it's free.” Straight answers.

Really free, indefinitely. Files.com makes its money from the enterprise File Orchestration Platform sold to IT teams at 4,000+ businesses — not from per-seat licenses on a desktop tool. The freemium is the strategy, not a temporary promotional period. The free tier for personal use and teams up to 10 users is permanent in the same shape Gmail's free tier is permanent.

ExpanDrive is built by Files.com.

The cloud connectors mounting your drive on macOS, Windows, and Linux are the same ones that run on Files.com's high-performance cloud File Orchestration Platform — used by 4,000+ businesses including Equifax, Rag & Bone, Cognizant, and Michelin, where petabytes of data move every month.

Download it. It’s free.

ExpanDrive 7 runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Free for personal use and teams up to 10. No credit card, no trial timer.
